- What is a European Technology Watch (ETW)?
A Technology Watch for security aims at identifying emerging technologies, assessing their potential relevance to security applications and providing advice on the potential impact of science and technology developments on national and European security and security research policies and strategies.

- Why a European Technology Watch?
The identification of strategic research priorities is fundamental to the fulfillment of the Security needs of the European society, while optimally making use of limited public funds. The "Technology Watch" is one of the methods applied to identify these priorities. STRAW intends to be a European Technology Watch.
- Which Security technology areas are covered by STRAW?
- Ensure Identification and control of goods and people
- Ensure and Maintaining Law and Order
- Protection of citizens (goods and people)
- Avert and foreseen Catastrophes
- Control and surveillance of areas
- Protection of areas and infrastructures
- Protection of networks
- Crisis management
- Control of disarmament/ fight against proliferation
STRAW is a mission-oriented TW based on the STACCATO taxonomy.
The following areas are addressed:
- How is the information collected?
- Research stakeholders: public and private bodies committed into research and development of Security technologies (examples: Public research centers, Academic research institutions, private sector R&D units, private research centers)
- Technology providers: firms and other organisations providing Security products and applications (examples: large corporations, high-tech SMEs)
- Security users: private and public institutions receiving benefit from the adoption of Security applications and solutions (examples: National ministries, Civil Protection bodies, Public Order bodies, public utilities, infrastructure managers)
STRAW is a participatory TW based on online questionnaires that have been defined to address three categories of Security respondents:
- How can I participate?
Participation is key in STRAW in order to ensure the better results. If you are interested in participate, the first step is the registration in the STRAW community. Only registered participants will get access to the results of the STRAW.

- To identify new challenges and opportunites derived from STRAW results.
- To participate and influence the future Security Research Agenda.
- To get visibility in the Security Community and exchange experiences.
